Midfielder Toni Kroos officially said goodbye to football, two days after the German team’s disastrous defeat to Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
“That’s it,” Toni Kroos wrote in a post on his personal Instagram. “But before I take a break and at least try to understand what has happened in the last 17 years, I don’t want to miss the opportunity to say thank you to everyone who accepted me for who I am and who I am.”
The 2014 World Cup winner thanked his fans, club, coach and team-mates, as well as friends and family, adding that “there’s nothing better than seeing your son proud of his dad”.

Kroos has won a host of trophies, mainly with Real Madrid, but also with Bayern Munich – including six Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, three Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and one Copa del Rey.
In May, the 34-year-old announced he would retire at the end of Euro 2024. This means the quarter-final between Germany and Spain will be his 114th and final appearance for Germany.
Kroos ended his post with the words: “Last but not least: Thank you football! The beautiful game of each one. And… nothing! It’s all over”
Meanwhile, Spain midfielder Pedri has forgiven Toni Kroos for sending him out of the Euros in the quarter-finals.
Pedri was ruled out of the remainder of Euro 2024 on July 6 due to a left knee injury he suffered after a strong tackle on Kroos in the opening minutes of Spain’s quarter-final against Germany.
Kroos publicly apologised to the youngster at the end of the Instagram post and Pedri thanked the 34-year-old.
“Thank you Toni Kroos for your message. This is football and these things happen. Your career and achievements will live forever,” Pedri said.
