A week after winning the NBA championship for the 18th time, the Celtics selected Baylor Scheierman with the 30th choice in this year’s draft. They selected Anton Watson with the 54th overall pick.
Summer League, which begins for Boston on Saturday, July 13, with a game against the Heat, will be their first opportunity to witness those two suit up for the reigning champions. Here’s the whole schedule for the Sin City Celtics.
While the full roster has yet to be announced, Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe reports that Jaden Springer, Jordan Walsh, Drew Peterson, and undrafted free agent Tristan Enaruna will join Scheierman and Watson in Las Vegas, where D.J. MacLeay will replace Tony Dobbins as head coach.
The Celtics re-signed Peterson on Wednesday, bringing him back on a two-way contract, the same one he had with Boston last season. JD Davison, who has a two-way deal for the 2023-24 season, is an unrestricted free agent. Despite this, Himmelsbach expects him to suit up for the Summer C’s.
Following the draft, Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations, commented, “JD will be a free agent, but we very much (would) like to try to figure out a way to get him back in (some) capacity.”
After being named to the All-NBA G League Third Team and helping the Maine Celtics reach the Finals, Davison may not need a spectacular performance in his third Summer League excursion to convince Boston that he’s worth another contract with the team that chose him 53rd overall in 2022. However, showing his ability for the rest of the Association may provide him with more options as he considers his next step.
