Parade of Champions: Over 1 Million Fans Flock to Boston for Celtics’ Victory Rally

Over a million Boston Celtics supporters were showered with confetti on Friday as the team rode through the city in duck boats while holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy in celebration of their NBA championship victory.

Big groups of people gathered downtown to begin the celebrations that morning. Following gridlock and obstacles forcing club owner Wyc Grousbeck and his family to walk the last half-mile to the arena, many of those waiting outside TD Garden were delighted to an early brush with the trophy.

Following their entry into the arena, Grousbeck and other organization members kicked off the festivities with a rally that drew in players and their families, as well as representatives from the Celtics organization, arena workers, season ticket holders, and guests like Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

It’s astounding. It doesn’t feel real anymore. During a pre-parade rally at the Garden, All-Star Jayson Tatum said, “But just trying to stay in the moment.”

The squad and awards were then loaded into duck boats for the approximately 90-minute parade. It was the Celtics’ second championship parade of the century and the thirteenth for the city.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., the parade started in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street. Before the parade came to a finish on Boylston Street close to the Hynes Convention Center, the team spent roughly ninety minutes riding duck boats past City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common on Tremont Street.

According to Mayor Michelle Wu’s office, “well over” one million people attended.

Officials from MBTA Commuter Rail stated that Friday’s predicted attendance was “on par with 5 days of regular weekday ridership condensed into 5-6 hours.”

The city had to wait over 20 years for this celebration, but the Celtics are well-positioned to attempt to make NBA history by becoming the first team to win two titles in a row since the Warriors in 2018.
