Cristiano Ronaldo contributed to Portugal’s third goal against Türkiye with a rare act of teamwork.
After leading 2-0 in the first half, Portugal did not stop and continued to search for more goals. In the 55th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to score and celebrate for the first time against Turkey. However, he made a decision that surprised many people.
From a long pass, Ronaldo broke the offside trap and faced goalkeeper Altay Bayindir without being marked by anyone. He could have finished himself to score but instead passed the ball to Bruno Fernandes, who easily put the ball into an empty net.
Obviously for a player who is often criticized for being selfish in his finishing, this action shows how Ronaldo plays as a team player.
Before that, in the opening goal, Ronaldo lost his balance and fell to the ground after a cross from Nuno Mendes, allowing Bernardo Silva to appear in time to finish successfully. In the situation where Portugal increased the gap, it was funny that while Ronaldo was still blaming Joao Cancelo for the bad pass, the Turkish defender scored an own goal.
With the pass for Fernandes to score, Ronaldo’s consolation was that, although he has yet to find the Turkish net in his career, he assisted his eighth goal at the European Championship, the most of any player since 1968 (tied with Czech Karel Poborsky).
Ronaldo is also currently leading the list of top scorers in Euro history with a total of 14 goals.
