The legendary Boston Celtics are the only team with the most NBA titles once again, and they were greatly assisted in achieving this feat by their formidable tandem of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
On Monday night, the Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, taking a 4-1 series lead and securing their 18th league championship.
Tatum, a star player for the Celtics, finished with a game-high 31 points, 11 assists, and 8 rebounds. Brown, another outstanding player, contributed 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists.
It’s an odd sensation. We succeeded! We succeeded! Following the game, Tatum yelled on the ABC broadcast. “What a wonderful sensation this is. I have no words to say.
After averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and five assists per game over the course of the series, Brown was voted the NBA Finals MVP. Brown gave credit to Tatum, who also had a strong case for MVP, for contributing to his success after he accepted the Bill Russell Trophy in front of the home crowd.
“I share this with my brothers and my co-conspirator, Jayson Tatum; it was a true team effort.” “He was at my side the entire time,” Brown remarked.
With their first championship since 2008, the Boston Celtics have now won more titles than any other team in NBA history, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers (17 wins in Minneapolis and Los Angeles).
The Mavericks were attempting to make NBA history by being the first team to win a postseason series after falling behind 0-3 at one point. They defeated the Celtics 122-84 in Game 4 on Friday in Dallas to save a sweep, but that just made it easier for the Celtics to win the championship at home.
An emphatic half-court shot concluded Boston’s commanding first half.
Boston played disciplined basketball in the first quarter, but the Mavericks struggled early on, converting just one of their first nine field goal attempts. Boston exploded for a 9-0 run to end the quarter with a 28-18 lead, just as Dallas was getting back on track to cut the deficit to one point.
In the second quarter, the Celtics increased their lead to 21 points by applying more pressure. The dynamic duo of Celtics players Tatum and Brown, who combined for 31 points in the first half, were at the heart of Boston’s outstanding effort.
Payton Pritchard’s half-court buzzer beater for Boston put the finishing touches on a strong first half that enthralled the TD Garden crowd. With the basket, the Celtics took their largest halftime lead, 67-46.
Boston never gave up in the second half, going up to a 26-point advantage. The Celtics were always the first to react when the Mavericks showed any sign of weakness.
Star guard Luka Dončić of the Mavericks, who placed third in the MVP vote for the season, concluded with 28 points and 12 rebounds on Monday. Kyrie Irving contributed 15 points (5 of 16 shooting) and nine assists. Guard Jrue Holiday of the Celtics played unrelenting defense to keep the Mavericks players in check while scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Celtics dominated the Playoffs, setting a team record with a 10-game winning streak, and finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA (64-18).

Boston then defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-1 to make their third straight conference finals appearance—a feat they last accomplished during their 1984–1988 five-year run.
As teams move deeper into the playoffs, the path to the Finals is typically expected to get harder. But that does not appear to be the case for Boston. The Celtics defeated the Mavericks in five games after sweeping the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Following defeats by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals and the Golden State Warriors in the Finals in 2022, the Celtics made a few significant moves in the summer to assemble a formidable five-man team.

Derrick White, an overqualified role player, is with the two, but Tatum and Brown were the ones who really made a difference.
After the team won the championship, Tatum said on the ABC broadcast that the Celtics maintained their composure in the face of increasing pressure heading into Game 5.
We are a strong team that has overcome many obstacles together during the past two to three years of my tenure. What will they say at this point? said Tatum.
