Egypt Issues Official Statement Amid Mohamed Salah Controversy

Egyptian FA Dispels Rumors: Mo Salah Did Not Refuse Substitution

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially addressed and dismissed rumors surrounding Liverpool star Mohamed Salah’s alleged refusal to be substituted during Egypt’s recent World Cup qualifiers. This clarification follows media speculation after Egypt’s match against Guinea-Bissau, where Salah played the entire game and scored a crucial goal to secure a 1-1 draw.

The Incident: Substitution Confusion

The controversy arose during stoppage time of the match against Guinea-Bissau. As substitutes Mostafa Fathi and Nasser Maher prepared to enter the game, only Maher eventually took the field, leading some to speculate that Fathi was initially supposed to replace Salah. Observers noted Fathi returning to the bench, prompting rumors that Salah had refused to come off.

Official Statement: No Refusal from Salah

In response, the EFA released a statement clarifying the situation: “There is absolutely no truth to the rumors that Mohamed Salah refused to leave the pitch. Salah was not going to be substituted off in the first place. Hossam Hassan was content with only bringing on Nasser Maher.”

This statement aimed to quell the growing controversy and emphasize that the decision to keep Salah on the field was purely tactical.

Salah’s Recent Controversies with Egypt

This is not the first time Salah’s involvement with the national team has sparked debate. In March, he was excluded from the squad as he recovered from a hamstring injury, despite having recently returned to action with Liverpool. Addressing this, EFA board member Walid El-Attar explained the decision was made in consultation with Liverpool and after thorough communication with Salah.

“There was communication between Liverpool, the EFA, and Mohamed Salah. There was also an exchange of official letters in which Salah’s full injury condition was explained,” El-Attar noted. “The general idea is that Salah needs to return to the pitch gradually, and this is already happening with Liverpool. He needs continuous monitoring with the medical team.”

Commitment to the National Team

Despite the speculations, El-Attar assured fans of Salah’s dedication to the national team. “Mohamed Salah does not at all object to joining the Egyptian national team at any time. On the contrary, Salah loves to play for Egypt. Everyone in the EFA and the Egyptian national team aims to promote the interest of the national team, as well as Mohamed Salah.”

Injury Woes and International Duty

Salah’s commitment to Egypt has often seen him play through injuries or return early from international duties, as seen during the African Cup of Nations earlier this year, where he had to leave the camp prematurely due to injury.

What’s Next for Salah and Egypt?

Looking ahead, Salah is expected to rejoin the national team for the critical World Cup qualifiers in June. As Egypt aims to secure its place in the 2026 World Cup, Salah’s presence will be pivotal. The EFA and fans alike are hopeful that his recent controversies will be overshadowed by his contributions on the field.
