Christian Eriksen Unhappy with Manchester United Role, Hints at Possible Exit

Christian Eriksen Unhappy with Limited Role at Manchester United, Will Reassess Future Post-Euro 2024

Christian Eriksen has expressed his dissatisfaction with his limited playing time at Manchester United and plans to reevaluate his future following Denmark’s Euro 2024 campaign. The 32-year-old midfielder, who signed with United on a free transfer in July 2022, has started just 12 Premier League matches this season and has completed a full game only once since January.

Eriksen was notably left on the bench during United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final, highlighting his frustration with his current role. Speaking to TV2, Eriksen said, “For me, the season has been a little different to other seasons. It has been a slightly different role. It’s new to me, but it’s also new to the outside world. It is clear, in relation to how people talk.”

When asked if it is easier to accept being a substitute towards the end of his career, Eriksen replied, “No, it’s the same. I was also a bit lucky that I didn’t sit on the bench so much when I was younger. But I did it once in a while. It’s never fun. That’s for sure. Personally, you always want to be the one who is chosen first in the team. Sometimes the coach looks the other way. But then I play for United, so there is just a battle for places, because there are a lot of good players.”

Eriksen has just one year remaining on his contract with Manchester United. When questioned about his future, he stated, “For me, there is full focus on the European Championship and then we have to see where we stand.”

Despite his club frustrations, Eriksen demonstrated his enduring quality by scoring a superb goal to secure a 2-1 win for Denmark in a friendly against Sweden on Wednesday evening. Denmark will compete in Group C at Euro 2024 alongside England, Slovenia, and Serbia. United striker Rasmus Hojlund praised Eriksen’s performance and highlighted his importance to the Danish national team.

“I would describe him as a world-class player,” Hojlund said after the win over Sweden. “He will be really important for the team for the European Championship. It was great to see him score at the end. It was really good to see him play again and get 90 minutes. He has needed to play a lot, because he is a player with an insane amount of quality.”
