Anthony Martial leaves Manchester United after failing to live up to expectations

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial, a forward for Manchester United, announced his departure from the team after nine seasons.

After United paid £36 million to sign the Frenchman from Monaco in 2015, he became the most expensive teenager in history, but he never quite lived up to the hype.

The 28-year-old made 317 appearances for United and scored 90 goals. On December 9, the team lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth, marking his final match as a member of the team.

After groin surgery in January, he resumed training, but he was never selected for the first team again.

This summer is when his contract expires.

He posted on social media, saying, “I write to you today to say goodbye. It’s with great emotion.”

“It’s time for me to start a new chapter in my career after nine amazing years with the club.

“It has been an immense honor for me to wear this shirt and play in front of you, the greatest fans in the world, since I arrived in 2015.”

“Manchester United will always be in my heart.”

In addition to winning the FA Cup, Europa League, and Carabao Cup with United, Martial spent 2022 on loan at Sevilla.

In 2021, he made his final cap for France.

Rashford to take break from social media

In the comments section of Martial’s Instagram post, a number of Manchester United players sent their best wishes. One such player was Marcus Rashford, another striker, who wrote: “So many memories together.” Brother, stay blessed.”

Rashford, meanwhile, announced on Twitter on Monday night that he would be taking a vacation from social media.

The 26-year-old had a dismal season, scoring just eight goals, and was left out of England’s provisional team for Euro 2024.

“It’s time to come off socials for a few weeks,” he stated.

“I want to give myself a mental vacation after a trying season for everyone, both personally and professionally. I’m grateful to my fans for supporting me during a trying time.

“To the ones that didn’t, just remember at United, we always stick together.”
