The Professional Basketball Writers Association named Stephen Curry the 2023-24 Magic Johnson Award winner on Wednesday. The honor’s namesake created an unintentionally awkward moment while celebrating the Golden State Warriors superstar.

“Congratulations to Stephen Curry on winning his second PBWA Magic Johnson Award, honoring a player who displays ‘cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and fans’ both on and off the court!” Johnson tweeted Thursday. “By the way @StephenCurry30, I had fun hanging out with your mom last night at the Sparks home opener!”

Johnson almost certainly wasn’t making a crude joke. The Hall of Famer, known for matter-of-factly stating the obvious on social media, was legitimately just telling Stephen Curry that he saw Sonya Curry at a WNBA game.

Johnson and Sonya Curry were both at Walter Pyramid on Wednesday night to watch the Los Angeles Sparks play the Atlanta Dream.

The former NBA icon is part of an ownership group buying the Los Angeles Sparks. Johnson’s new team recently drafted Sonya’s goddaughter, Cameron Brink, with the No. 2 pick.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram’s John W. Davis posted a video of Johnson greeting Sonya Curry courtside. So, let’s give Johnson the benefit of the doubt and say he had no ulterior motives with that comment.

Stephen Curry, who also won the Magic Johnson Award in 2016, joins Damian Lillard and Shane Battier as two-time winners. Considering he was just recognized for “grace in dealing with the media,” the 36-year-old didn’t make anything of Magic’s curious remark.
