The two-time Golden Glove winner had apparently decided to stay in Spain and wait for a LaLiga offer early this year, but his return to England implies a more open attitude.

According to Mail Sport, Newcastle were interested in him due to Nick Pope’s long-term ιnjury, but he would have had to accept a wage drop.

His final agreement at United paid him £375,000 per week.

He preserved 17 clean sheets in his final season, three more than his closest competition, but there was no settlement to a contract dispute.

The Spaniard won five major titles with United, including the Premier League in 2013, and was voted club player of the year.

However, he was released, and the club reportedly upgraded Marcus Rashford to De Gea’s wage level.

His replacement, Onana, who joined from Inter Milan for £47 million, acknowledged he questioned his decision to join.

‘It was incredibly hard,’ he told MUTV. ‘But it’s the first time I’ve encountered such a situation.’
