Rasmus Hojlund, a striker for Manchester United, called midfielder Bruno Fernandes “an amazing captain” and said he felt the midfielder’s criticism this season was unwarranted.

Hojlund was acquired by United for a sum of £72 million from Atalanta last summer because the team saw the player’s potential to be a world-class player.

Hojlund was expected to contribute more goals in the first half of the season, but it took him until December to score his first goal in the Premier League. He had a successful period in the start of 2024, and many believe that in order to continue such results, he needs to receive better treatment.

According to a report that surfaced last month, Hojlund became angry with Fernandes and Diogo Dalot for their lack of play. The dispute was reportedly resolved swiftly, and since then, he has publicly supported his captain against any criticism that has been directed at him this season.

“He’s [Fernandes] also getting a lot of criticism and it’s not fair because he’s doing everything at the top level all the time and he’s an amazing captain,” Hojlund told the BBC.

The statements were taken from a contemplative interview in which he reviewed his experience to date at Old Trafford. Regarding his move from Atalanta, Hojlund remarked, “I had a long period where I had to wait because the clubs needed to agree on a fee and I couldn’t get carried away.”

“It was difficult to support a team that wants you to be their striker. Since Christian Eriksen functioned somewhat as an agent, he performed some background work.

“But he doesn’t need any more money, therefore I haven’t paid him an agency fee! Dreams don’t come much larger than that, so I was really thrilled to be able to begin playing for my favorite team.”

Another talking point was the picture of Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Kobbie Mainoo sitting together while celebrating. “My bros sitting there, myself, Alejandro and Kobbie,” he replied.

“I believe that all three of us would have that many minutes if the season had started at the beginning. You would probably be kidding. We are confident in our abilities and know what we can offer the club, but we also understand that we still have room for improvement. If we keep working hard, I’m sure I’ll score a lot more goals.”

This season, Hojlund has scored 14 goals in all competitions, including five in the Champions League group stage.
