Fernando Torres’ budding coaching career is about to begin a new chapter. Starting next season, the former Liverpool striker will lead Atlético Madrid’s reserve team.
While official club channels have yet to openly confirm the decision, given that Atlético B still has five games left this season, Spanish source AS reports that it is a done deal.
‘El Niño’ has been teaching Atlético’s first youth squad for three years, establishing himself as a well-known coach.
He understands the club inside and out, is revered by the supporters, and serves as a role model for the academy’s prospects.
In two seasons, the Atlético Juvenil team won the league title ahead of archrivals Real Madrid and created history by reaching the Youth League Final Four for the first time, demonstrating their ability to compete against Europe’s best.
A TRACK RECORD OF Developing Young Talent
Aside from the tremendous prize haul, Torres has developed a number of players for the reserve squad, including Pablo Barrios, Iturbe, Kostis, El Jebari, and now Rayane.
Barrios, in particular, has already established himself as a seasoned player, and the others show great promise for the future.
Torres’ three-year contract, which is currently focused on guiding Atlético’s junior squad to success in the Copa de Campeones, will expire at the end of the season.
Big shoes to fill.
Torres will now take over the B squad, which has had exceptional success under Luis Tevenet in the last three years.
The 49-year-old has two promotions, and the team is currently mid-table in the Primera Federación, battling well with large clubs like Malaga.
However, despite his achievements, Tevenet’s contract is about to expire, and the club has made no moves to renew it. He will undoubtedly be in high demand because of his outstanding record at Atlético. However, given his age, he may already have surpassed his limit.
Torres, who has recently turned 40, believes that his finest days are still ahead of him.
