Jordan received sixty-one of the 133 votes cast, and James received fifty-six, suggesting a slim lead. For the third time in a row, Jordan’s lead has shrunk in this poll, with James closing the difference considerably this time.

Jordan had a significant advantage against James in 2019: 73 percent of the vote to James’s 11.9 percent. By 2023, Jordan had reduced his margin but it was still significant, with 58.3 percent of the vote to James’ 33 percent.

But the difference between them in the most recent poll has narrowed to just 3.8 percent, suggesting that players’ perceptions have changed.

Lakers' LeBron James Seems to Call Out Teammates After Loss to Nuggets

James’s exceptional play on the court, even in this advanced stage of his career, is responsible for this change. James has accomplished incredible things in the last 14 months, such as smashing the record set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most points scored, leading the Lakers to the West Finals and an In-Season Tournament Championship, and being the first player to be selected to 20 All-Star teams.

Statistically speaking, he is one of the best players in NBA history because of his ability to average at least 25 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds per game.

It’s obvious that James’ longevity and consistent success are changing the story of his career, even as the discussion rages on.

Though others contend that their different journeys have diverged too greatly to allow for a fair comparison, analogies to Jordan are unavoidable.

James’s impact in basketball lore will be viewed very differently as a result of his ability to play at an elite level for more than 20 years.

What Could Be The Reasons Behind Michael Jordan’s Significant Drop in Stats?

The shifting demographics of NBA players over time may have contributed to Michael Jordan’s decline in the GOAT rankings. There are fewer players who were around when Jordan was at his best, as the league changes and new draft picks are added every year.

Compared to older player generations, younger players might not have had the chance to personally see Jordan’s effect or might not have been as impacted by his legacy.

It’s also possible that time has lessened Jordan’s impact on today’s athletes. In comparison to more recent successes, the relevance of Jordan’s accomplishments may diminish as the NBA grows internationally and new players appear. It’s possible that younger athletes are more likely to look up to current players or athletes in their own generation than to historical figures like Michael Jordan.

In addition, players’ interactions and consumption of basketball history have evolved as a result of the widespread use of social media and digital platforms. Although Jordan’s accomplishments and highlights are easily accessible on the internet, social media’s instantaneous nature often gives precedence to the news and fashions rather than his earlier successes.

Because of this, younger athletes might not hold Jordan in the same regard as previous generations that grew up seeing him play in person or on television.

Ultimately, Michael Jordan’s declining standing in GOAT polls may be caused by the NBA’s shifting structure, time, and changing media landscape, as newer players may not view him as the undisputed best player of all time.
