Late in extra time, the Sky Blues, inspired by former Red Devils scorer Mark Robins, believed they had won it, but Victor Torp’s substitute goal was disqualified for offside.

After missed shots by Casemiro, Callum O’Hare, and Ben Sheaf, Rasmus Hojlund scored the game-winning kick to give United a significant respite. They went on to win the shootout.

Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire’s goals gave the Red Devils, who were strong favorites to advance, a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Bruno Fernandes’ deflected shot went in at the near post, seemingly displacing Erik ten Hag’s men just before the hour.

But Ellis Simms’ incredible goal 19 minutes from time gave the Sky Blues supporters cause for celebration, and O’Hare’s deflected shot set up a thrilling finish.

Even though United was in the lead, Haji Wright’s spectacular stoppage-time penalty forced extra time.

Four minutes remaining in extra time, Simms had a chance to win it for the Sky Blues, but his shot was blocked by the bar and Torp’s effort was disallowed by VAR.
