According to sources in Spain, Man United defender Raphael Varane has made a free transfer bid to his old team, Real Madrid.

After an unimpressive three seasons at Old Trafford, the former France international’s contract expires in the summer, and the Red Devils have not extended an offer to him.

Raphael Varane offers himself to Real Madrid

In the summer of 2021, Varane made a £41 million transfer from Real Madrid to Manchester United, but the Frenchman never seemed to fit in.

And now that there are rumors circulating, he is likely to be among the ten players who leave Manchester United in the summer. One of them could return to Real Madrid.

Varane “offered” himself to Real Madrid, according to Spanish newspaper Nacional, since he “wants to return” to the Bernabeu in the summer before leaving Manchester United.

According to the source, “he wants to go back to where he was happy” and “there is no intention, on either side, to extend their relationship” at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United defender “would arrive at zero cost and with a salary that would fit perfectly into Real Madrid’s salary scale,” thus it’s thought that it may happen.

In the event that the agreement falls through, Varane’s representative has reportedly “already contacted different teams,” with Lille defender Leny Yoro thought to fit Real Madrid president Florentino Perez’s “profile” more.

According to Spanish website Fichajes, Man Utd may already be moving toward a long-term replacement for Aaron Anselmino, the center defender for Boca Juniors, willing to pay a “crazy price.”

The 18-year-old is being intensively watched by scouts from the Premier League team, who view Anselmino as a potential defensive reinforcement in light of Varane, [Victor] Lindelof, and [Jonny] Evans’ potential exits.

Man Utd is considering a number of promising young center-backs, including Jarrad Branthwaite, as transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano revealed that the team “could make at least one signing in that position this summer.”

In his Caught Offside piece, Romano stated: “Jarrad Branthwaite is enjoying a fantastic season at Everton. There have been rumors in the media that Manchester United is interested in the gifted young center-back, but other sources also say he might be too costly for them.

“The truth is that this is still early in the narrative; Man United does value Branthwaite and have him on their shortlist among three or four other names, but we’ll have to wait and see whether this becomes anything more.

Will Man Utd acquire two new center backs this summer?

Regarding Everton’s asking price, from what I understand, clubs are still awaiting an explanation from Everton. We must hold off until then. 

However, as was previously mentioned, United has been scouting a number of significant center backs, including Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer, Antonio Silva, and Jean-Clair Todibo. Depending on what happens with Raphael Varane, they may sign two or even more players in that position this summer.

“Reminding everyone of what I stated earlier this week, United has not extended an offer to Varane for a new deal. I’ve been informed that the rumors we had in March regarding a new deal based on appearances and playing time are untrue. 

Let’s see if things change, but Varane hasn’t gotten a proposal from the team as of yet, so his future is still up in the air and it’s possible that he will need to be replaced before the upcoming season.
