“I remember saying, ‘If we fail, then let’s fail in the most beautiful way,’ and that’s exactly how I see it again,” Klopp recalled saying in a Times interview. That’s not how I generally prepare these things, certainly not the day before or four years beforehand.

“Everyone in the stadium believed, “That’s it,” following the game [last week against Atalanta. After a week, I doubt that everyone believes the decision has been made. Our goal is to win the match. We had best play well if we hope to win. We have a chance to win if we play well. After that, we’ll see.

“We’ll see who handles the issue better. Atalanta will deserve it if they succeed. If not, then a unique event will have occurred. Their task is much harder tomorrow because they don’t need to score any points. We must perform better. It’s not easy because, although you generally fight for everything, it is difficult for them when you are up 3-0.”

Liverpool will attempt to achieve this feat for the first time when they visit Italy on Thursday. They have never come back from a three-goal deficit away from home in Europe.
