Due to their Champions League elimination, Arsenal was not granted a spot at the Club World Cup.
After their first leg of their quarterfinal match ended in a 2-2 draw, Mikel Arteta’s team was sure they would win at Bayern Munich.
But Thomas Tuchel’s team dominated the match in Bavaria, blunting the Gunners.
And Joshua Kimmich’s goal gave the Germans the victory that evening, winning 1-0.
Arsenal, who also suffered a severe blow to their title hopes with Sunday’s loss to Aston Villa, will now head back to England to nurse their wounds.
For the Gunners and their supporters, though, things are only about to get worse.
That’s because they won’t be competing in the Club World Cup alongside Chelsea and the defending champion Manchester City, who were eliminated from Europe on Wednesday by Real Madrid.
Under the revised structure for the next year, 32 teams will compete for the coveted trophy.
And in order to compete, Arsenal have to win the Champions League this year.
However, their loss in Munich has already eliminated them from both competitions.
Instead, RB Salzburg of Austria will take their place.
They have only ever advanced past the group stage of the Champions League and have never taken home a European championship.
Nevertheless, since only two teams from each domestic league can advance, they are the team with the highest ranking in the FIFA coefficient rankings.
Germany is represented by Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, while Italy is represented by Inter Milan and Juventus.
Real Madrid and Atletico will compete in Spain, while Benfica and Porto will represent Portugal.
The USA, Mexico, Japan, and Brazil are among the other nations that will be represented in 2020.
