Manchester United Elevates 18-Year-Old Centre Back to First-Team Squad Amidst Injury-Plagued Season

This season, Man United’s treatment room has been among the busiest in the Premier League, but their injury problems appear to have gotten worse this week, as Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane have joined the list of injured players.

Erik ten Hag’s team has had a season marred by injuries, and due to a shortage of defenders, the Dutchman is said to have called up an 18-year-old center back to practice with the starting lineup before their matchup with Bournemouth.

The team declared on Thursday that due to muscular issues, Varane and Evans would not be ready for this weekend’s match. The injury that the France international suffered during their 4-3 loss to Chelsea is now expected to keep him out of action for “a few weeks.” Evans’s problem is predicted to keep him out of action for a “shorter-term.”

The only two central defenders available for Saturday are Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire, since Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof have also lately been ruled out due to injuries.

The Manchester Evening News reports that the Red Devils have summoned up academy standout Jack Kingdon to practice with the starting lineup on Friday in their absence.

The 18-year-old became one of United’s most potential young talents after joining from Morecombe in 2020 for a reported “six-figure fee.” He progressed through the Carrington academy.

Kingdon, an age-grade representative for Scotland, has been having a fantastic season with United’s U18 Premier League team. He has scored twice in 14 games to help the young Red Devils take the lead in the league.

In addition, he has been used for United in their 2023–24 UEFA Youth League campaign, starting four games against FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

The 6 feet 1 inch center back has most of his experience as a defender, but he has also played age-grade as a striker and a midfielder. He is a capable right-back as well.

If Kingdon is included in the first-team squad to play against Bournemouth this weekend, he might follow in the footsteps of fellow United sensation Kobbie Mainoo and make his debut for the senior club.

With the Red Devils, Mainoo has had an incredible season. Last weekend, he scored his first goal for the first squad at Old Trafford against rivals Liverpool.

Since United exited the Champions League earlier this season, there has been growing concern in recent weeks over whether the team will make it to the Champions League this season.

But Ten Hag’s worries about Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay’s fitness during a press conference on Friday are even worse news for United supporters.

The forward was seen hobbling off the field during Sunday’s game. “Rashy [Rashford] trained yesterday, so how he recovered from it today, we have another training today and then we will make a decision on it,” the manager stated.

Ten Hag responded, “Scott, I don’t think so,” when asked if McTominay will be able to play again after missing the match against Liverpool due to a knee injury.

“It’s highly dubious because we have a training tomorrow, and he will push to be a part of it,” the person said.

Untied’s accomplishments from the 2022–23 season, when they placed third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup, have not been surpassed, despite the fact that they are still in the FA Cup.

However, Ten Hag has pointed a large portion of United’s season-long problems on the club’s absurd injury total.

“No squad can handle so many injuries,” he stated, as reported by The Guardian.

If you consider the players’ availability, I believe we performed to the best of our abilities. We lost a lot of important players over the season.

“The performances we witnessed in January and February, when the players were available, were excellent.”
