Kobbie Mainoo’s spectacular goal captured the spotlight, yet another Manchester United talent, Willy Kambwala, showcased his immense potential in a thrilling display against their fierce rivals, Liverpool.
In his first start at Old Trafford, the 19-year-old Kambwala exhibited maturity, strength, and exceptional defending against Liverpool’s formidable attacking trio of Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah, and Luis Diaz. Despite the intense pressure, Kambwala’s composed performance helped United secure a crucial point.
While Mainoo has rightfully garnered praise for his outstanding midfield displays this season, Kambwala’s emergence has been equally impressive. Born in Congo and having captained France at the under-16 level, Kambwala’s journey has been marked by resilience, including overcoming a lengthy injury layoff until September 2021.
His recent appearances, particularly against Liverpool alongside Harry Maguire, underscore his readiness to make an impact for United. Kambwala’s dedication to the badge and the club’s tradition of nurturing academy graduates was evident in his impassioned remarks following the match.
Kambwala said: “It’s my job, it’s my passion. I know what I need to do on the pitch. I know I need to give everything from the first moment, to impress and to enjoy it. That’s what I like to do. It’s my passion. And I know, every time I have the opportunity to be on the pitch, I need to give everything to leave everything on the pitch.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Kambwala emphasized his commitment to giving his all on the pitch, embodying the club’s values and ethos. His sentiments reflect a deep sense of pride in representing United and a determination to contribute to its future success.
“I’m very proud. Very grateful. Thanks, God. Thanks [to] the manager. Thanks, all the staff for the opportunity they gave to me. I know all the players who come through the Academy. I’m proud to represent this badge, this team and, hopefully, [there is] more to come together in the future.”
Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Kambwala highlighted United’s disappointment at not securing all three points, citing their belief in their ability to win the game. His impressive statistics, including a 100% ground duel success rate and 29 completed passes, further underscored his impactful performance.
“We didn’t take the three points, so it is still a bit frustrating and [I’m] disappointed about that because we know we should win the game. We had it under control. “
“We fought really well together. We stick together, we defend well in the back four with the keeper, with everyone, and we know we should keep the three points at the end, but, still, I am really proud of the game and what I could achieve.”
As United looks ahead, Kambwala’s emergence as a promising talent offers optimism for the future. With his passion, dedication, and talent, Kambwala is poised to make significant contributions to United’s continued success on the pitch.
