With a last-gasp equaliser at Wembley Stadium, Jude Bellingham saved England from humiliation after a second consecutive defeat.
The Real Madrid player scored with nearly the final kick of the game as England, who lost to Brazil on Saturday, drew late with Belgium.
However, England’s effort was tarnished by two costly blunders from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender Lewis Dunk, both of which allowed Youri Tielemans to put Belgium ahead.
After the game, England’s rescuer Bellingham said: ‘I know how bad it would have been if we had lost two games in a row.
‘You have to have perspective in these games; there are a lot of lads making their debuts, many of whom I’ve previously played with.
‘We produced a lot of chances; I had one that I should have scored, as well as a couple of other shots on goal; I’m glad I can make it up to the squad, but we really should have won with all of our chances.
‘But these two games will prepare us well for the Euros.
‘I know everyone will be unhappy about it, but you have to accept these games for what they are and use the good while learning from the problems.’
Bellingham complimented the debutants, especially Mainoo. ‘I’m sure the manager is pleased with the players you got to see because they came in and were fantastic,’ he added.
‘So yeah, over the two games, I’m pleased with my teammates, of course. We’re never glad to lose or draw, but we’ve got to be satisfied with how some of them performed.
‘We trust everyone who joins the squad. They’re all on the squad for a reason: they’re good players, and we trust everyone that joins.
Regarding Bellingham’s role, England manager Gareth Southgate stated: ‘Jude is the headline tonight, his competitive mentality, desire not to lose, to win in the end was deceived in getting the late goal.
‘However, the entire squad demonstrated that and recovered from setbacks. I was quite happy with what I witnessed tonight.
Kobbie Mainoo, Ivan Toney (who scored England’s first goal), and Ezri Konsa made their complete England debuts on Tuesday.
Mainoo, a Manchester United teenager, was particularly brilliant, and Southgate added: “Kobbie, from a creative standpoint, gave us something different.”
‘His qualities are obvious to everyone: ability to perform under pressure, ride obstacles, and manage the ball in tight spaces. We are quite pleased with what he has accomplished; you cannot believe how young he is.’
However, England’s night was cut short as Stones went out with a groin injury after 10 minutes, potentially ruling him out of Manchester City’s title duel with Arsenal on Sunday.
However, Southgate insists that starting Stones in both games was not a risk, saying, ‘It wasn’t a gamble playing him in both matches. We’re disappointed if he had a problem, but it’s not an overload issue. I dislike sending players to their clubs when they aren’t totally fit.
On his debut, Toney said, “It’s very special to get on the scoresheet.” We would have been a little upset if we had lost the game, but Jude scored, and I thought we deserved something.’
