Ex-Celtics Forward Tristan Thompson Faces Suspension for Breaching NBA’s Anti-Drug Regulations

Former Boston Celtics player Tristan Thompson, who previously contributed to the team during the 2020-21 season with 54 appearances, now faces a 25-game suspension without pay from the NBA for violating the league’s anti-drug program. The suspension comes after the announcement that the 32-year-old Cleveland Cavaliers big man tested positive for ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033.

Having embarked on his second stint with the Cavaliers, Thompson has been playing in a bench role during the 2023-24 season, averaging 3.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game over 37 appearances.

Thompson’s tenure with the Celtics showcased his impact, where he averaged 23.8 minutes, 7.6 points, and 8.1 rebounds per game. However, his time in Boston was marked by a setback when he tested positive for COVID-19, causing him to miss nearly a month of action.

Originally signing a two-year, $18 million contract with Boston in November 2020, Thompson’s journey with the Celtics was cut short when he was traded to the Kings in a three-team swap in August 2021. The move was part of Boston’s strategic maneuvering to adjust its frontcourt, clearing space after re-acquiring Al Horford from the Thunder in June 2021 and recognizing the improved performance of Robert Williams.

Following his departure from the Celtics, Thompson played for the Kings, Pacers, and Bulls during the 2021-22 season. He briefly joined the Lakers just before the 2023 playoffs, participating in six games, before rejoining the Cavaliers in September.
