The Celtics improved their home record to 17-0 this season with a 126-97 victory over the Jazz on Saturday night.
The last time Boston won 17 consecutive home games to start a season was nearly 70 years ago in the 1957–58 season.
With their perfect 17-0 start, the 1957-58 Celtics set the franchise record for the longest home victory streak to begin a season. That feat is now shared by the Celtics in 2023-24.
To put things in perspective, the 1957-58 season was Red Auerbach’s seventh as Boston’s head coach. Bob Cousy was also in his seventh season of playing. Tommy Heinsohn and Bill Russell were both in their second season of professional baseball.
The Celtics have only one NBA championship, which came in 1957.
This year’s Celtics squad is etching their mark into basketball history 67 years and 16 trophies later.
Only five other NBA teams in the last 28 years have won 17 home games to start a season (2015-16 Spurs, 2015-16 Warriors, 2008-09 Cavaliers, 1995-96 Bulls, and 1995-96 Magic).
The Celtics have not only won 17 straight games at home this season, but they have also won more consecutive games in Boston dating back to last season. The Celtics have won their previous 24 regular-season home games, dating back to a win on March 8, 2023, nearly ten months ago.
When the Celtics play the Timberwolves on Jan. 10, they have the opportunity to extend their winning run and set a franchise record for consecutive home wins to begin a season.
