Boston Celtics Dominate Spurs, Extend Winning Streak to Six Games
In a commanding performance, Jayson Tatum led the Boston Celtics to a 134-101 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night, securing their sixth consecutive win. Tatum scored an impressive 25 points, while Jaylen Brown contributed 24 points to the team’s triumph.
Former Spur Derrick White returned to face his old team, notching 17 points, and Kristaps Porzingis made a strong comeback with 14 points and nine rebounds after missing a game due to a calf injury.
Boston coach Joe Mazzulla attributed the success to their defensive efforts, stating, “We got stops. I thought we were really good at doing both, protecting the paint and getting out to contest, which allowed us to get out in transition. I think our secondary transition, we did a good job of recognizing where the mismatch was and getting to it fast and playing together as a team through it.”
San Antonio struggled as Devin Vassell scored 22 points, and Victor Wembanyama added 21 points and seven rebounds. The Spurs have now lost seven of their last eight games.
Acknowledging the Celtics’ prowess, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich commented, “They are a championship-caliber team, that’s what they are out there for, that’s their goal, and they proved it once again. Joe does a great job with them. They’ve got good talent, obviously, all-star talent; and they’ve got the grit. They’ve got the execution and getting better all the time. That’s a tough challenge at this particular time for our group.”
With a stellar 12-2 record in December, the Boston Celtics closed out the month on a high note. The matchup between the Eastern Conference leaders and the struggling Western Conference bottom-dwellers unfolded as anticipated.
