Mikel Arteta insists technology is ‘not good enough’ after VAR was unable to conclusively rule on Tomas Soucek’s controversial opener

Arsenal have been left fuming after Tomas Soucek scored a controversial goal during West Ham’s 2-0 win.

The goal was reviewed by VAR for three minutes and 22 seconds as officials checked if the ball had gone out of play before Jarrod Bowen passed to Soucek to score.

Replays were unable to provide conclusive evidence because Bowen’s torso obscured the ball from the primary camera angle.

The referee was instructed by VAR to continue with his on-field ruling, which was a goal, because the camera on the other side of the pitch was likewise ineffective.

When Arsenal lost 1-0 against Newcastle earlier in the season, they had a similar outcome.

On that particular occasion, Anthony Gordon eventually bundled in his cross after Joe Willock was found to have kept the ball in play by a few inches.

Mikel Arteta went on the attack after the event, calling the referees “embarrassing” for letting the goal stand.

Following the game, Arsenal released a letter urging the PGMOL to “address the standard of officiating”.

Gunners supporters are incensed once more, with some saying VAR “robbed” them.

A Gooner declared: “VAR despises Arsenal.” Definitely out. Twice this season, it occurred.”

Another added: “The ball was out, it was completely past the post, VAR then moved it a frame forward when it was back in play. Scandalous!”

A third wrote: “Same mistake VAR made against Newcastle. Then what is the use of VAR for crying out loud. Ball out of play ”

The FA looked into Arteta’s comments following the Newcastle game, and the Spaniard might have been suspended for two games.

However, he avoided punishment when it was discovered that, instead of using the word “disgrace,” in his post-match press conference, he had used the Spanish phrase “desgracia,” which means “misfortune.”

Later, PGMOL chairman Howard Webb acknowledged that the referees made two incorrect calls during the game, neither of which had anything to do with Toon’s victory.

The ball was retained in play after Joelinton shoved Gabriel, as Arsenal supporters complained. However, Webb merely said referee Stuart Attwell erred in not sending out Kai Havertz and Bruno Guimaraes.

Gunners legend Thierry Henry demanded the addition of additional cameras at halftime during the West Ham match, which would have provided a bird’s-eye view of the incident.

“Well, that is the second time for us, away from Newcastle,” he stated. However, you must be above the ball to inform the umpires that the ball is out and to assist them in getting the proper angle.

“You can only determine if the ball is out or not in that manner.

We still don’t have an overhead camera, so there are far too many situations in which it’s unclear if the ball is out or not. We will shortly be in 2023 or 2024.

“So can we have a camera that can be above that can see if the ball is out or not, if not it is just impossible to see it.”

Officials were unable to demonstrate that the ball went out, thus former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg maintained that the goal had to stand.

“The officials are unable to make any other decisions,” he declared.

“A goal is a decision made on the pitch. It is not entirely certain that the ball has left the field. There isn’t any solid proof because the ball needs to be over the line plainly.”
