‘Lucky’ Performance Delights Lewiston Youth at Maine Celtics Basketball Clinic

Boston Celtics Mascot Thrills 100 Young Hoops Enthusiasts at Lewiston Armory

The charismatic Boston Celtics mascot, “Lucky,” brought his dunking prowess to the Lewiston Armory on Wednesday, captivating an audience of 100 campers. The Lewiston-based event, part of the free Jr. Celtics Academy clinic series organized by the Maine Celtics, aimed to engage young basketball enthusiasts during their winter break.

Among the attendees was sixth-grade point guard Amar’e “Russell” Murchison, who, like many of his peers in Maine, idolizes Boston Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jalen Brown. Despite not having the opportunity to meet the NBA All-Stars in person, Murchison found inspiration in a life-sized poster of Tatum displayed within the Armory.

The Jr. Celtics Academy clinic went beyond static displays, offering participants a chance to witness Lucky’s high-flying dunks and hear about his career journey. Lucky, the mascot, took the opportunity to share valuable advice with the aspiring young players.

“It’s my hope that by sharing a little bit of my story and my success, I can help these kids find their own path,” Lucky expressed after showcasing multiple dunks. “It’s by far the most rewarding part of the job, so I always look forward to these.”

Waseem Givens, the director of youth basketball for the Jr. Celtics Academy, emphasized the broader goals of the clinic, stating, “We build a foundation around basketball.” The program included stretching, ice breakers, and skill-building activities, gradually leading up to gameplay. Givens highlighted the camps’ role in creating a safe and positive environment for kids of all skill levels, providing an opportunity for fun and learning.

In a gesture of support for the local community, campers were handed “Lewiston Strong” rally towels, a symbol of resilience following the city’s October mass shooting. Givens underscored the Boston Celtics’ commitment to using their brand for good and reinforcing a sense of community in times of adversity.

The day’s festivities were not limited to the Jr. Celtics Academy clinic, as the Maine Celtics faced off against the Oklahoma City Blue, securing a 117-111 victory. Notably, the game marked the official start of the regular season, following the G-League standings reset after the winter showcase. The Boston Celtics organization continues to extend its influence beyond the court, reaching communities and inspiring young minds throughout the state of Maine.
