White’s All-Star Campaign Gains Momentum as Celtics Showcase Depth and Resilience

In a stark departure from recent struggles, the Boston Celtics refused to let history repeat itself as they triumphed over the Sacramento Kings with a commanding 144-119 victory. This resounding win came on the heels of a disappointing thriller the previous night and marked a departure from the franchise’s record 41 missed 3-pointers.

Despite the absence of their biggest star, the Celtics found a new hero in Derrick White, who is not only playing the best basketball of his career but is also undergoing a transformative metamorphosis. White’s All-Star caliber performance, highlighted by a near-perfect night from the field, has ignited a campaign supported by teammates and even Coach Joe Mazzulla.

While White’s stats make a compelling case for an All-Star nod, the Celtics’ team-centric approach and emphasis on sacrifice pose challenges for individual recognition. 

“Um, I mean he’s my coach, that’s what he’s supposed to say, right?” White said when informed of his coach’s endorsement. “I’m just trying to win games. That’s what I’m focusing on right now. Just do whatever I can to help us win.”

Mazzulla emphasizes the team’s identity built on freedom, confidence, and empowerment, with White emerging as a key orchestrator on the court. 

“Freedom, confidence, and empowerment from his teammates,” Mazzulla said of White’s recipe for success. “And so you take a look at a lot of the times when we want to settle the team down or we want to get to really good execution, we go to Derrick White pick-and-rolls. And sometimes it’s with Jayson, sometimes it’s with Jaylen, sometimes it’s with KP (Kristaps Porziņģis) only. 

Tonight it was KP only to attack the matchup, and we did a great job making the play. So his teammates are empowered, and he’s playing with a lot of confidence. It’s one of the reasons why we feel so comfortable with him at the point.”

The Celtics, a third of the way through the season, demonstrate a resilience and understanding of their identity that sets them apart from past struggles. The team’s response to a recent loss to the Golden State Warriors further solidifies their commitment to their culture and program.
