Following the San Antonio Spurs’ 129-115 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night, LeBron James was impressed by Victor Wembanyama.
He told reporters after the game, “He’s a special talent, and they’ve got a good one here,” according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Wembanyama finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and two blocks, while James finished with 23 points and a game-high 14 assists. The outstanding rookie also had five assists of his own.
Although the Spurs only managed their fourth win of the season, the former No. 1 overall choice has frequently demonstrated the skill that drew scouts’ attention when he was playing in France as a teenager.
Wembanyama was already averaging 19.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the floor prior to Friday night’s double-double. He also averaged 3.0 blocks per game, which was second in the league.
The two already have mutual respect for one another. James has already praised the 7’4″ big man, applauding his distinct style of play following a meeting with the Phoenix Suns last season.
“Everyone’s been a unicorn over the last few years, well he’s more like an alien,” he remarked, according to NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin.
“His ability to put the ball on the floor, shoot step-back jumpers in the post, step-back three-pointers, catch-and-shoot three-pointers, and block shots.” “He’s unquestionably a generational talent,” he later remarked.
Wembanyama expressed gratitude for the nickname in a February interview with Sports Illustrated’s Andy Nesbitt.
“First of all, I’m really glad he said that because I didn’t like to be called a unicorn,” Wembanyama was quoted as saying. “I like it because it’s something that isn’t from this world.” Yes, I enjoy being referred to as an alien. That’s exactly what I’m aiming for: something unique and different.”
The Spurs will play the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena on Feb. 23, giving James and Wembanyama another chance to square off.
