After a video leaked showing LeBron James entering USC’s arena during the national anthem and promptly taking a seat, UFC star Colby Covington joined the chorus of critics.
Covington made his comments on Wednesday night as he prepares to face Leon Edwards in a welterweight fight this weekend at UFC 296.
“If you despise America and don’t like the country that gave you a billion dollars, leave.” Alternatively, come deal with me. Travel to China. “Go to these sweatshops where you employ all of these laborers and use these women for pennies on the dollar to make your millions,” he stated during a news conference.
“You’re f—ed, LeBron James.” You’re a wimp. You’re a b—- and a cowardly coward.”
On Sunday, Luca Evans of the Orange County Register uploaded a video on X showing James heading into USC’s Galen Center in Los Angeles with his younger son Bryce and two of Bryce’s Sierra Canyon High School teammates. The footage showed James entering the stadium while the national anthem played. He was there to see his son, Bronny, make his debut after suffering a heart attack earlier in the summer.
Users on X remarked that James sat in his chair while “The Star-Spangled Banner” blared from the speakers and did not remove his hat, as is traditional for the national anthem. Toward the conclusion of the video, he eventually rises.
James was instantly chastised for purportedly having “zero respect” for the United States and disliking the country because he refused to stand for the national anthem.
Evans responded to the criticism when the video went viral.
“As the reporter who took this video, this is gross and completely mischaracterizes the situation,” he said in the article. “In Bronny’s time at Sierra Canyon, LeBron has done this for YEARS.” It’s objectively the greatest moment to stroll in so he doesn’t make too much of a commotion. “Put a stop to it.”
