After a remarkable 41-season tenure as the play-by-play voice for the Los Angeles Clippers, spanning back to their San Diego days in the late 1970s, Ralph Lawler retired a few years ago. His extensive broadcasting career provided him with a front-row seat to witness many of the NBA’s greatest players throughout the years.

While a considerable number of individuals in Lawler’s age bracket tend to lean towards Michael Jordan as the greatest player in basketball history, Lawler holds a strong and unequivocal stance that LeBron James surpasses all. In a recent statement on the platform formerly known as Twitter, now called X, Lawler asserted that the discussion isn’t even close; LeBron James, in his view, stands as the greatest player ever (h/t Lakers Daily).

“I made it clear in my book BINGO! 40 YEARS IN THE NBA and I will now repeat: “LeBron James is the Great player in NBA History.” Did you see him single-handed demolish New Orleans last night? I don’t even think the race for GOAT is close. And I have seen them All. “

“I am Not crazy. LeBron is the Best there has ever been. He does more to help his teams win than anyone who has ever played the game. And, it is Not even Close. Add the length of his career without a fall-off in his talent level and it is not even worth discussing.”LeBron James master class lifts Lakers into NBA tournament final - Los Angeles Times

LeBron James, a name synonymous with basketball greatness, has not only achieved major milestones but has also added a remarkable display of longevity to his illustrious career. Now in his 21st NBA season, James continues to redefine expectations.

Throughout the current season, he has been a force to be reckoned with, averaging 25.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game. Shooting at an impressive 55.1% from the field and 40.5% from beyond the arc, James has played a pivotal role in stabilizing the Los Angeles Lakers, guiding them to a 15-10 record and securing the fifth spot in the competitive Western Conference as of Thursday.

Despite his incredible achievements, the one aspect often cited in discussions about James’ claim to the title of the greatest player ever is his 4-6 record in the NBA Finals. However, the Lakers, under James’ leadership, have demonstrated their ability to contend for this year’s world championship. A potential fifth NBA ring would undoubtedly strengthen James’ argument for being the greatest basketball player in history, adding another layer to his already extraordinary legacy.
