Takeaways from the Celtics-Knicks game: White and Porzingis lead the way in the C’s triumph

The Boston Celtics’ dominance at TD Garden continued against the New York Knicks on Friday night.

The C’s advanced to 10-0 at home this season with a 133-123 triumph. The only other NBA team that has yet to lose at home is the Denver Nuggets (9-0).

Friday’s game featured plenty of scoring, as it was only the fourth time in Celtics-Knicks history that the two teams combined for more than 200 points after three quarters. Boston is now 3-0 versus New York this season.

All five Celtics starters scored in double figures, including veteran big man Al Horford (14 points). Derrick White (30 points) and Jayson Tatum (25 points) were the leading scorers.

R.J. Barrett (23 points), Jalen Brunson (23 points), and Julius Randle (20 points) led the Knicks in scoring, but it wasn’t enough to stay up with the Celtics’ offensive barrage.

The Boston Celtics (16-5) will have three days off before facing the Cleveland Cavaliers (12-9) on Tuesday night. Here are three key lessons from Friday’s victory.

The backcourt of C shines.

Derrick White and Jrue Holiday demonstrated on Friday night why they are regarded as one of the league’s greatest starting backcourt tandems. White’s father Richard dubbed the duo “The Stock Exchange” after they combined for 46 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists against New York.

White got out to a fast start, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. He also contributed 11 points (3-3 3-PT) in the third quarter to Boston’s lead.

He finished with a season-high 30 points, three short of his career high, on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting (6-10 3-PT). He also demonstrated his All-Defensive abilities with two steals and two blocks. When White moved to the free-throw line late in the fourth quarter, the TD Garden fans chanted “MVP” in appreciation.

Holiday had one of his better offensive games of the season, scoring 16 points (7-11 FG) and dishing out five assists. His 11 points came in the first half.

Two steals and a block were added by the perennial All-Defensive selection. The C’s are nearly hard to stop when “The Stock Exchange” gets it going on both ends of the court.

Kristaps Porzingis appears in the sequel.

Porzingis returned to the starting lineup for the Cs after missing the previous four games due to a calf ailment and didn’t miss a beat.

In less than two minutes, he made his presence known by scoring the Celtics’ first eight points with a dunk and two 3-pointers. The 7-foot-3 Latvian finished the first quarter with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and was just getting started.

Porzingis’ opening half was nearly flawless. He hit his first seven shots, going 7-for-8 (3-4 3-PT) and scoring 19 points in the opening two frames.

Porzingis had a quieter second half, finishing with 21 points (7-13 FG), three rebounds, two steals, and an assist in 29 minutes. With a few minutes left in the fourth quarter, head coach Joe Mazzulla yanked Porzingis out of the game, likely to rest him in his first game back.

Regardless, Friday’s performance was precisely what C’s supporters expected from their prized offseason acquisition. With Porzingis on the court, Boston is a different team, and the team will need “The Unicorn” to stay healthy in order to win Banner 18.

Jaylen Brown’s unusual ejection

Jaylen Brown was disqualified for the first time in his career one week after Jayson Tatum was ejected for disagreeing with officials.

Brown was called for a technical foul with 7:19 left in the fourth quarter after objecting to a reach-in foul on Immanuel Quickley. With five fouls, he was dismissed from the game, but he was ejected with his second tech while on the bench, and the ref that ejected him was already on the other side of the floor.

After being tossed out of the game, several C’s players and staff members had to hold Brown back as he approached the official. The complete scene can be seen below:

Mazzulla was just as dumbfounded by the ejection as Brown.

“I’ve been on the sidelines in the NBA for 5 years and I’ve seen players act and say things that are way more disrespectful than that,” Mazzulla said in his postgame press conference. … “I’m doing everything I can to not cost myself $25k.”

Brown voiced his frustration with the ref after the game.

“I wish I would’ve got my money’s worth,” he said of his ejection. “I always thought my first career ejection would be something a little more exciting, maybe a tussle or something, not some overemotional ref who had a bad day.”

According to the pool report, Brown’s dismissal was caused by his waving off the official, “which under the respect of the game guidelines is considered an overt gesture and an unsportsmanlike act.”

Fortunately, Brown’s absence didn’t cost the C’s in the fourth-inning stretch. Despite a late surge with Brown out, New York succumbed by double digits.

Before being ejected, Brown had 17 points (7-13 FG), four assists, one steal, and one block.
