Despite a poor season, the Golden State Warriors still ‘want to keep’ Klay Thompson

The veteran of the National Basketball Association, who has played for 11 years, is currently in the final year of his contract, although his performances have been average.

Klay Thompson, who is currently in the final year of his contract and has had one of the worst seasons of his NBA career, must be going through a lot of thoughts. The three-point specialist has been having a difficult time finding his shooting during the course of this season.

The Golden State Warriors may be dissuaded from signing the four-time champion to a new contract as a result of this, but NBA source Mark Medina believes that the franchise still “wants to keep him” and will not “entertain trading him” despite the fact that he has been shooting more poorly than usual.

When one thinks of the Golden State Warriors, the first thing that comes to mind is their exceptional history of championships in recent years, since they have won four championships since the year 2015.

The Warriors’ core, which consists of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, has remained intact throughout this time period and has been one of the most devastating trios to ever play together on the hardwood.

Due to the fact that they have not been able to piece together two consecutive victories since the beginning of November, the team’s overall performance as a unit has been somewhat different from what people have gotten accustomed to seeing from the side of head coach Steve Kerr.

It should come as no surprise that the team is unable to shoot, which is the root reason of this terrible shooting streak. The only other player on the Warriors who can even come close to reaching half of that scoring output is the future Hall of Fame point guard Stephen Curry, who is now averaging 29.2 points a night. All of the other Warriors players are not even close.

That is, with the exception of his Splash Brother, Thompson, who, despite maintaining a modest average of 15.2 points per game, is nonetheless the second-leading scorer on the team. To begin the year, the 33-year-old player’s performance on the court has been nothing short of mediocre. This is especially true for someone who is currently in the final year of a five-year contract worth $190 million and is looking to extend his contract.

The player and the franchise are so far apart in their appraisals of a new contract in terms of both the amount of money and the length of the contract that ‘absolutely no progress’ has been made in negotiations, according to a story that was published by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski before to the beginning of the season.

Since then, Thompson’s performances on a nightly basis have been mediocre, and a report from Kendra Andrews of ESPN refers to the concept that his shooting troubles and lack of security over a new contract are interwoven and have ‘weighed’ on the five-time NBA All-Star. Andrews believes that Thompson’s failure to secure a new contract has been a contributing factor in his bad performances.

With wing scorer Andrew Wiggins, who hasn’t looked at all himself to start the 2023-24 campaign, also struggling with a shooting slump, along with the absence of defensive anchor, Green, for large parts of the season as a result of both injury and a four-game suspension after an altercation with Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves, it is hardly a surprise that the Warriors find themselves currently outside a Play-In tournament seed with their below .500 record.

Curry needs his teammates to stand up and answer the call in order for the Warriors to add to their win column. If they want to add to their win column, then they need to have more contributors to their efforts on offense. It is not possible for the Warriors to “entertain trading” Thompson.

Despite the fact that Thompson has been having offensive difficulties throughout the first quarter of the season, Medina is unable to envision any scenario in which the Warriors decide that it is time to move on from Thompson. This could be accomplished through a trade or by allowing him to walk away when he is eligible for free agency in the summer of following year. The journalist, on the other hand, is of the opinion that the sum that will be provided on the Warriors’ eventual contract offer will precisely match the 33-year-old player’s performances during this season.

I don’t believe that things are ever going to get to the point where the Warriors are willing to consider dealing him or even not keeping him even if they are in a bad situation. The equation that we need to work out is exactly what his contract number is going to look like, and a portion of that is going to be determined by how well he performs on the court.

It is going to come down to what number both parties can feel comfortable with, where Klay feels somewhat valued, and the Warriors are being responsible for managing their payroll, now that he is getting older and he hasn’t been the same player as he once was. They want to keep him, but their decision will be based on what figure both parties can feel comfortable with.

All across the hardwood, there were issues with shooting.

A career-low percentage of 3Ps: 34.8%

3 was missed by Klay.

After establishing a reputation in the league as a three-point specialist who has the potential to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, as Thompson has done, you are subjected to a greater level of scrutiny than other players when your shots do not fall consistently.

The Warriors’ march to the title in 2022 and throughout the 2022-23 season provided Thompson with glimpses of his elite-level shooting talent, despite the fact that he had suffered back-to-back season-ending injuries when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and then a tear in his Achilles tendon the following year. The shooting performance of the five-time All-Star has, nevertheless, been marked by a number of career lows through the first quarter of the fresh season. The California native is now only converting 34.8 percent from beyond the arc, despite the fact that he is known to shoot a career average of 41.4 percent from long range and has only failed to attain such a mark once in his 11-season career. Despite the fact that Thompson is widely considered to be one of the top catch-and-shoot scorers, he is only connecting on 36.1 percent of his three-point shots when he is in a catch-and-shoot situation. This is a significant decrease from the 41.4 percent he recorded in the previous season.

When it comes to pull-up shots from range, Thompson appears to be connecting with the highest efficiency. He is averaging 40.0 percent from three-point range, which is the same rate as he had last year, and he is also overall shooting 42.0 percent.
