Mikel Arteta insists that Aaron Ramsdale wants to stay at Arsenal but cannot guarantee that he won’t join Newcastle United in January.

Since David Raya’s arrival, Ramsdale has been relegated to the position of No. 2 goalkeeper, raising many questions about his future.

Ramsdale has only appeared in one Premier League game—against Raya’s parent club Brentford—and one Carabao Cup since the Spaniard arrived to the Emirates on loan.

The 25-year-old has been connected to a move away from the Gunners, with rumors growing that Arsenal intends to sign Raya on a permanent basis and that Arteta was oddly reticent to single out Ramsdale for praise after his clean sheet against the Bees.

Following Nick Pope’s protracted injury, there have been rumors in the last few days that Newcastle is interested in his services. Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has also been connected to the Magpies.

Ramsdale is reportedly amenable to the transfer, particularly as his spot in the England team for Euro 2024 appears to be in doubt.

In his Monday pregame press conference, Arteta expressed his confidence that his No. 2 keeper, Aaron, has no intention of leaving North London, saying, “I want Aaron with us.” Having two extremely skilled goalkeepers, including Aaron who is remaining with us, makes me very delighted.

‘He’s willing to play. Like any player, he wants to play for Arsenal. That’s what he wants to do.

‘As well for England, it’s not like he has started a lot of games, so hopefully we can help him be better here so then he can play for England. We want to be better, so we want to add to what we already have. That’s the intention.’

However, the manager would not rule out Ramsdale, or indeed any of his other players, leaving the cub when the January transfer window re-opens.

‘I won’t do that to any player. Any player,’ he added ahead of Tuesday night’s clash at Luton Town.

‘I cannot tell you that any Arsenal player is not going to leave in January. Or he is to stay here for the next three years.

‘I won’t say that no player is going to go to Newcastle. Or no member of the staff, either. I won’t say it. If you say yes or no, I won’t say it.

‘I cannot guarantee that nobody is going to be leaving in January. For Newcastle or any other club.’
