The fitness status of Joel Matip and Alexis Mac Allister was updated by Jürgen Klopp after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory against Sheffield United on Wednesday night.
Matip was substituted off the pitch in the 69th minute of the Reds’ Sunday afternoon victory against Fulham at Anfield, and imaging tests have revealed the defender’s anterior cruciate ligament damage.
“It’s an ACL, ruptured, so that’s what I unfortunately expected from the first second,” Klopp said to reporters at Bramall Lane. That was how everything seemed. Very regrettable.
Early in Liverpool’s match against Sheffield United, Mac Allister took a hit that required extensive bracing to his knee.
The midfielder from Argentina played the whole first half before hobbling off after 59 minutes.
It was unfortunate, Macca, Klopp said. “He stepped on his knee early, cutting it. We just strapped it as long as the incision was open; it was obviously uncomfortable, but he was still able to play.”
“Then we stitched it but then obviously it got a bit tighter there and then he couldn’t move anymore. Now we have to see how long that will take. I hope not too long.”
