Leeds United came close to securing the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV in the summer of 2022. However, the forward decided to remain with PSV and later made a significant move to Liverpool in January.

His impressive performances at PSV had caught Leeds’ attention in August 2022, but he ultimately chose to continue playing in the Netherlands before making his move after the World Cup.

How close did Leeds get to signing Gakpo?

A private jet was chartered in the final stages of the summer transfer window as Leeds neared the completion of the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV:

Ultimately, Gakpo chose to stay with his childhood club in preparation for the World Cup in Qatar. His outstanding performances for the Netherlands led them to the quarterfinals and paved the way for his £35 million move to Liverpool in January 2023.

Why did he chose not to join?

In discussions with Voetbalzone journalist Jelle Kusters, Gakpo has disclosed the factors that influenced his decision to reject a move to Leeds. He attributes his choice to his unwavering faith, stating:

“I had difficult, but also very good years. In the end, I kept going and I always kept faith. I’m grateful for where I am now.

“In the end it was a very stressful transfer period with clubs coming and going. As a religious person, I have also sought my answers from God. It was very clear to me that it was better to stay and that’s a good thing!”

Gakpo’s decision to decline Leeds’ offer and secure a move to a top-tier club proved beneficial in the long run. While it might have altered the trajectory of Leeds’ season with his potential impact, the deal couldn’t be finalized. The missed opportunity is regrettable, as his addition could have significantly improved the team’s prospects in the top flight, even considering the evident defensive challenges.
