There is a possibility that Bronny James will have his NCAA debut with the USC Trojans on Sunday, facing Long Beach State. The much-awaited college entrance of Bronny James could materialize by the week’s conclusion. According to reputable NCAA basketball journalist Seth Davis, there are indications that Bronny is anticipated to receive clearance this week, making his debut likely against Long Beach State on Sunday.
“Last Thursday, James’s family announced that his doctor had cleared him to resume all basketball activities three and a half months after he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during a team workout at USC’s Galen Center. James still needs to be cleared by USC’s medical staff, which is expected to happen sometime this week. There is still much uncertainty in this situation, and given the severity of what happened, no one is cutting corners. But it is looking increasingly possible that James could see his first action when USC plays its next game on Sunday at home against Long Beach State.”
Bronny James faced a medical scare in September 2023 when he experienced a cardiac arrest during training with USC. Fortunately, the situation, while extremely alarming, did not jeopardize Bronny’s life, allowing him to return to the court and continue pursuing his NBA aspirations.
In his potential debut for the USC Trojans, Bronny might find himself coming off the bench as the backup to Isaiah Collier, a projected top-five pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. While there’s a chance he could start alongside Collier instead of Boogie Ellis or Kobe Johnson, it’s deemed unlikely in his initial appearance.
LeBron James, Bronny’s father, expressed his willingness to miss a Lakers game if it aligned with Bronny’s debut. However, this won’t be necessary if the Lakers progress to the In-Season Tournament Finals, as James would then play on Saturday in the Championship game, allowing him to attend Bronny’s game on Sunday.
How Is Bronny Looking On The Court?
Bronny James has been out of the public eye since his cardiac arrest, undergoing a recovery period and participating in closed USC practices with limited exposure. However, some individuals outside the Trojans’ circle have witnessed Bronny in action, including Jay Williams, a legendary Duke Blue Devil and ESPN analyst.
In a phone conversation with Seth Davis, Williams shared insights into Bronny’s game and mindset after observing him warm up before the Trojans’ recent loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
“He seemed unafraid. There was a workmanlike approach to how he operated. You could tell he’s been around professionals. I asked him what he felt like he needed to improve on. He said, ‘My handle needs to be tighter, but that will come with reps.’ There was no cockiness. There was just confidence that he was going to figure it out.”
Given the environment in which Bronny has grown up, it’s improbable that he will ever take his basketball skills for granted. Despite the considerable hype surrounding him, Bronny has never been regarded as one of the elite players in his class, earning the designation of a five-star recruit only in the latter part of his senior season. He faces the challenge of disproving allegations of nepotism and securing a place in the NBA.
Bronny now has the opportunity to make a significant impact on the Trojans, who have had a 5-3 start to the season and lost their status as a ranked top-25 team in the country. Facing Long Beach State as underdogs presents an ideal scenario for Bronny to make his debut.
