5 things to learn from Liverpool’s Europa League victory

Here are five key talking points from Liverpool’s 4-0 LASK match in the Europa League.

A small “rotating” ring

Jurgen Klopp always rotates his squad when entering the busiest period of the season. He did that this year, when a number who did not play in last weekend’s draw with Manchester City were brought on.

And yet, with signs of a strong squad, this is still a very reliable team. In terms of quality, there may still be a few holes in the defensive midfield position, but Liverpool currently have very good squad depth.

Nothing shows that better than strikers. Diogo Jota is injured, Darwin Nunez is on the bench, Klopp can still use Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. They all scored yesterday.

Rotation is not a problem for Klopp.

Joe Gomez is finding himself

Things are a little strange for Joe Gomez. He mainly backs up Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back and that’s usually not a problem.

But with Alexander-Arnold now playing more of a hybrid role between right-back and holding midfielder, Liverpool are asking a lot of Gomez. Of course, he was originally a centre-back but now this player is also moving into midfield and holding a lot of the ball in areas that require creativity.

Gomez deserves a lot of recognition for his efforts. He created three chances in 56 minutes in this role, even assisting the opening goal. Only Ibrahima Konaté had more of the ball, with the Englishman at right-back.

Gomez even almost made a long-range shot that could have brought the team’s first goal. It’s a role that could really suit this player.

199 and hasn’t stopped yet

Mohamed Salah scored to make it 3-0 from the penalty spot and with that, he scored 199 goals for Liverpool. The Egyptian is now close to becoming the fifth player in Red Brigade history to reach the 200 milestone.

Gordon Hodgson was first, followed by Billy Liddel, Roger Һunt and Ian Rush. It’s an elite group of some of the best goalscorers we’ve ever seen at Anfield – and one where Salah will soon belong.

England will be hopeful this weekend against Fulham.

Very open or too open?

Liverpool attacked strongly, especially in the first half. They easily bypassed LASK’s defense, bringing the strikers into play continuously every time they had the ball.

The downside is that LASK penetrated Liverpool’s defense too often. In fact, they did it when the Red Brigade was leading 3-0. Klopp should have kept things tighter in that situation, but luckily in the end this didn’t matter.

Liverpool was even the team that took advantage of the space when the opponent rose to score the fourth goal.

First place in the table

Liverpool went through as the group winner. That is very meaningful when the Red Brigade enters the busiest period of the season. They will have fewer matches with this position.

Klopp can rotate a lot against Union SG – the match right before the next cоnfrоntatiоn with Manchester United. Meanwhile, their opponents will have an important match in midweek against Bayern Munich.
