In the Europa League match between Liverpool and LASK, Cody Gakpo is anticipated to start up front as he continues his “competition” with Darwin Nunez, who is playing well.

The starting lineup is revealed ahead of time since UEFA regulations require that a player attend all pre-match press conferences in Europe with the manager.

Gakpo assumed media duties on Wednesday; the Dutchman is scheduled to start the Europa League’s penultimate group match against LASK.

That will most likely be as a central striker, with Nunez set to be listed on the bench, and two of Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, and Ben Doak flanking him.

This season, the two have essentially split the playing time up front, though Gakpo has recently been utilized more in lower divisions than the Premier League.

“I think he’s doing great. Like you say, it’s like a competition,” he said of Nunez.

“But we both have to just keep working hard, being the players we can be, to help the team as much as we can.”

It is somewhat of a change from the previous campaign, when Gakpo was Nunez’s first choice and was virtually solely utilized as a striker after joining from PSV Eindhoven.

Nunez has taken over this season as Jurgen Klopp’s team has been able to rediscover its rhythm and is no longer at panic stations. The Dutchman has alternated between different roles.

“Obviously I’ve played in a few different positions: striker, in the midfield and left wing,” Gakpo continued.

“I think I can do better, obviously. You want to improve every day, you want to become a better player all the time.

“But I think it went well and it can be better as well. So just working hard to become a better player.”

He added: “Last season I played almost every game as a striker, this season as a striker or as a midfielder.

“I just focus on those two positions really and just show what I can do, try to be the best player I can be.”
