Cody Gakpo Opens Up About His Versatile Role at Liverpool
Dutch forward Cody Gakpo, who made a move to Liverpool in the last 10 months, discussed his diverse role at the club during a pre-Europa League press conference. Gakpo, who initially gained attention with a stellar performance for the Dutch National Team in the World Cup Winter Edition, has experienced versatility in positions since joining Liverpool.
While primarily a winger, Gakpo’s transfer raised eyebrows as he joined a roster that already included Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nuñez—all known for their left-attacking positions. Given Jurgen Klopp’s preference for positional flexibility, the move wasn’t entirely unexpected, but it did attract attention. Despite playing as a striker, midfielder, and winger in various roles like False 9 or playmaker, Gakpo has not only adapted well but has embraced the shifting roles with enthusiasm. In the lead-up to the Europa League match, he took the opportunity during the press conference to discuss his role as a versatile player in Liverpool’s squad.
“Obviously I’ve played in a few different positions – striker, midfield and left wing. I think I can do better, obviously. You want to do better every day and become a better player all the time. Last season I played almost every game as a striker. This season, [I have played] as a striker or a midfielder. I just focus on those two positions really, and then just show what I can do and try to be the best player I can be.”
Observing Cody Gakpo assume various positions on the field, stretching defenses and luring defenders into different areas, has been a highlight. His ability to provide attacking partners with opportunities to enter dangerous positions is reminiscent of Roberto Firmino, both in terms of positional flexibility and eagerness to contribute in various capacities. There’s optimism that, as Gakpo continues to develop, he can add more attacking threat and playmaking skills, becoming Liverpool’s own versatile asset.
