Cody Gakpo’s contribution to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City has been acknowledged.
As the game was coming to an end and Pep Guardiola’s team was gaining ground on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, Steve McManaman criticized Alisson Becker.
Stuart Pearce thought the England player was “nervous” throughout the match, but Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered the goods with a superb pin-point finish from the outside of the box after he was supplied the ball by Mohamed Salah.
However, as he told Premier League Productions, Liverpool’s man on the right made sure to highlight his “amazing” run that opened things up and his unsung hero of a teammate, Cody Gakpo.
The 24-year-old was added to the team as a second-half replacement after not starting the match, and he had a significant influence.
While all of Jurgen Klopp’s substitutions, such as Ryan Gravenberch, had an effect, Trent Alexander-Arnold made sure to draw attention to Cody Gakpo’s selfless actions.
Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool
“In that position there when Mo (Salah) gets it, we work on our triangles,” said Alexander-Arnold.
“There should be three players. There should be me, Mo and the number eight. You see Cody’s made an amazing run to take away the centre-back and the fullback, then I have been able to back up the play.
“When Mo gets the ball, I try to get into that space to potentially whip one into the back post and get one across goal, or if I can, get a shot off and I was able to do that.”
Point suits Liverpool
This is a really excellent argument, and the Liverpool manager, players, and supporters will regard it as a box that gets checked. Many people doubt the team’s ability to contend for the Premier League championship.
