On Sunday, Stephen Curry won the American Century Championship, his first victory in the celebrity tournament, with an 18-foot putt for eagle on the last hole.
Curry, a standout player for the Golden State Warriors, topped his Saturday hole-in-one with a closing eagle on the par-5 18th hole at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course near Lake Tahoe. He threw his hat in the air upon the putt and dashed into his wife Ayesha’s arms.
“This is something you dream about, because I don’t do it for a living,” Curry remarked. I’ve been participating in this competition for nearly ten years, and I can now display some gear as a result. It’s quite unique.Using a modified Stableford scoring system, the eagle was worth six points. A birdie earns players three points, a par earns them one point, and a double bogey or worse results in minus two points.
Curry finished with 75 points, two more than the runner-up, former professional tennis player Mardy Fish, who took home the title in 2020. Fish started the 18th hole three points ahead of Curry but finished on par. After his ace on the 152-yard, par-3 seventh hole this past weekend, Curry went viral once more.
“I felt like I would have a chance because I was hitting the ball pretty solid,” Curry remarked. Surprisingly, I was cool on the putt. The final five feet seemed to move slowly.
Fish tied Curry at three of the first six holes with birdies. When Curry bogeyed the 11th, 12th, and 14th holes, he took the lead.
Curry scored 72 points on Sunday according to standard scoring. With a 3-under 69, Fish recorded the best round of the day.
