Nikola Jokic scored a season-high 39 points, including 11 rebounds and nine assists, and the Nuggets defeated San Antonio 132-120 on Sunday night, causing the Spurs to lose their 12th consecutive.
The top choice in June, Wembanyama, had 22 points, 11 rebounds, and six steals but couldn’t stop San Antonio’s skid. The third-longest consecutive loss in team history. The Spurs lost 13 straight in 1988-89 and 16 straight last season.
Denver went to 8-0 at home with 25 points from Michael Porter Jr. and 20 from Reggie Jackson. On their previous road trip, the Nuggets had lost four of five, including Friday’s setback to Houston that eliminated them from the NBA In-Season Tournament.
A right heel strain kept Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon out of the blowout defeat against the Rockets, where he missed all 12 field goal attempts. Justin Holiday replaced Gordon in his first start of the season.
After the 1-4 road trip, Denver coach Michael Malone announced he would alter up his rotation, which meant DeAndre Jordan would back up Jokic. The veteran scored six points and five rebounds in six minutes in the first half, making all three field attempts.
The Nuggets led by four after the first quarter and 68-48 late in the second before San Antonio rallied to within 12 at halftime. Denver outscored the Spurs 33-17 after a 7-2 run in the third to lead by 23 heading into the fourth.
Wembanyama nearly made a highlight dunk in the second half, but Julian Strawther fouled him.
