Portugal finished the qualifying round in top place in Group J despite playing poorly; they defeated Iceland with ease.
In their encounter, Portugal took on Iceland with much confidence. After nine games, they already have 27 points, which guarantees them a spot in EURO 2024.
Portugal plays with the same tenacity, though, because Cristiano Ronaldo is still hungry for record-breaking performances.
Portugal had a difficult time going since the opponent team settled in for defense from the opening whistle.
However, in the 37th minute, Bruno Fernandes’ precise strike ultimately penetrated Iceland’s two-layer defense.
With this goal, the second half became even more lopsided.
Bernardo Silva was a chronic agitator, making frequent and highly unpleasant returns inside the right wing corridor.
The substitution of striker Ricardo Horta was made by coach Roberto Martinez in the 62nd minute. From this point on, the home team’s pressure was amplified.
In the 66th minute, following Ronaldo’s earlier missed shot, Horta sprinted in to score.
Joao Felix’s game-winning goal was the previous significant contribution. The ball went wide, leaving the opposing goalkeeper with no chance of capturing it.
Before the game was over, Ronaldo was unable to score. Portugal, however, prevailed in each of their ten qualifying matches.
