Barcelona receives €3m compensation from FIFA after Gavi’s injury, young star could miss more than 8 months

Last night, during the international break, FC Barcelona received really bad news: star midfielder Gavi injured his knee badly while representing Spain against Georgia.

Manager Luis de la Fuente started the 19-year-old in the starting lineup once more, but he was injured and departed the field in tears after spending less than 30 minutes there.

It is believed that Gavi tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season after preliminary testing.

FIFA will pay Barcelona back.

FIFA regulations provide that clubs are paid if a player sustains an injury while playing for their country and is out of commission for longer than 28 days.

Because of this, Mundo Deportivo is claiming that Barcelona is entitled to at least €3 million in compensation from FIFA as a result of Gavi’s injury, with the player anticipated to miss at least six months of action.

Under FIFA’s club protection policy, Barcelona will have to pay compensation to FIFA for releasing players to their national teams starting on Sunday, the 28th day of absence following the injury.

This takes us to December 16th, which is the day Barça will begin receiving this payment.

Clubs can receive up to €7,500,000 in compensation for each injured player under the FIFA program. A sum determined by applying a daily compensation cap of up to €20,548 over a maximum of 365 days.

Barcelona would thus be eligible to receive almost €3,082,200 in the event that Gavi is sidelined for six months. For eight months, that amounts to €4,315,080.

The loss of Gavi and the contributions he makes to the team on the field cannot be made up for by money.

Right now, everyone’s best hope is that the 19-year-old recovers quickly and without any major long-term effects from what happened last night.
