102-100: Memphis Grizzlies battle, fall late to Celtics in thriller at home

Even though they had trouble much of the game, the Celtics managed to overcome the Memphis Grizzlies 102-100 to win another crucial game. Their record now stands at a league-best 11-2 after the victory, their sixth consecutive victory.

With a shocking eight offensive fouls and seventeen turnovers overall—eight of which came from Jayson Tatum—the Celtics did not play their best basketball. Tatum remained quiet for the majority of the game but finished with 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Jaylen Brown shot just 5-16 from the field but finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Kristaps Porzingis kept the Celtics ahead of the pack when Brown and Tatum were having trouble. He finished the game with 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 (!!) blocks. With a minute remaining in the game, he also scored the final four points through a pair of free throws and an open dunk off of a pass from Jayson Tatum.

“Emotional match,” Porzingis declared following the match. “The Grizzlies came to win, and they played hard.” We had to work hard at this one. We didn’t play to our best ability.

Santi Aldama (28 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists) and Desmond Bane (30 points, 8 assists) led the way for the Grizzlies. After leading Memphis to an All-Star game the previous season, Jaren Jackson Jr. ended the game with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Memphis had 21 second-chance points at the end of the game on 13 offensive rebounds.

Marcus Smart, who will be sidelined for the next month due to a sprained ankle, was not in Memphis.

The Celtics travel to Charlotte tomorrow to complete their road trip.
