Over two decades ago, Chauncey Billups witnessed LeBron James’ debut in the NBA during a preseason matchup between the Detroit Pistons, led by Billups, and James’ team. Fast forward to the present, Billups, now coaching the Trail Blazers in Portland, observed James once again on Friday. With a touch of grey in his beard, Billups watched as James, now 7,351 days into his illustrious NBA career, led the Lakers to a 107-95 victory, maintaining their unbeaten record in the in-season tournament.
Displaying his enduring prowess, James amazed with an early basket, acknowledging his skill with a head shake. He signaled his strength after sinking a three-point shot, flexing and nonchalantly shrugging off fourth-quarter challenges. Finishing the game with 35 points, equaling his season high, and nine assists, James exhibited only subtle hints of slowing down as he navigates through his remarkable 21st NBA season.
“To see that and just to see him now, it’s just incredible, man,” Billups said before the game. “What he’s been able to do, what he’s been able to continue to do. We all, one day when we get really old, we’ll be telling our grandkids and stuff that we watched that whole movie. So we’re all pretty lucky to be able to say that.”
The Lakers will conclude pool play in the inaugural in-season tournament on Tuesday against the Utah Jazz, with the opportunity to secure a spot in the single-elimination phase with a victory.
During their Friday matchup in Portland, the Lakers demonstrated dominance, never trailing throughout the game. Coach Darvin Ham’s rotation of the main eight players contributed positively to the team’s performance. Cam Reddish’s point-of-attack defense played a key role in generating several of Portland’s 19 turnovers, translating into 27 points for the Lakers. Despite a slow shooting start, Anthony Davis rebounded with 16 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks, and three steals. Christian Wood also delivered one of his standout performances off the Lakers’ bench, contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds.
