Barcelona signed the 23-year-old Dutch midfielder to a dream contract

Even though the first third of the 2023–24 season has only just begun, Barcelona’s coaching staff has already identified areas in which their club could improve.

The left and right back positions are ones that need to be given a great deal of consideration. While Alejandro Balde does not have a capable deputy, Joao Cancelo is now on loan, and it will be very expensive to buy him permanently.

It is important to remember that the contracts of both Marcos Alonso and Sergi Roberto will be up for renewal in the summer.

The front line has also been performing below expectations, and Barcelona has to find a long-term solution to the issues they are having on the left wing.

However, the defensive midfield is Barca’s largest problem, even more so than any of these other issues. Since Sergio Busquets left the club in the summer of 2023, the Catalans have been without a suitable player to fill that position.

They did end up paying €3.5 million to Girona to acquire Oriol Romeu, but the player was never viewed as a long-term answer to any of their issues. In addition, the Spaniard’s performances have already encountered a slump at this point in the competition.

A report from SPORT claims that Barcelona are interested in acquiring Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord and have their sights set on the player.

The player, who is currently 23 years old, has been on Barcelona’s radar for some time. The club has conducted many scouting missions on him, and they are very pleased with the findings they have received.

Wieffer is able to play both the no. 6 position and a more advanced role as an interior, which contributes to his reputation as a very technically capable player. In addition to his physical prowess, he stands close to 1.9 meters tall and can give virtually any opponent a run for their money in the middle of the park.

Low cost' option? Barça looks at Mats Wieffer as a possible defensive pivot

Due to the fact that the Dutchman has renewed his contract all the way until 2027, it will be challenging for him to negotiate. Despite this, it is reasonable to expect that he will be available for a price that is lower than that of some of the other notable players available, such as Martin Zubimendi or Joshua Kimmich.
