As we get closer to the winter transfer window, Barcelona are getting ready for an important year that lies ahead.

Despite the fact that it is not anticipated that the club would significantly reduce the size of the team in January, it is anticipated that the club will experience some significant adjustments.

The retention of outstanding players will be one of the club’s top focuses going forward. The process has already been kicked off by the Blaugrana, who have extended their contracts with a couple of its stars, including Alejandro Balde.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the renewal of Frenkie de Jong appears to be the next target for Barcelona.

The present contract that De Jong has with Camp Nou is set to expire in 2026, but Barcelona is looking to extend it even further. According to Fabrizio, the Catalans are planning to have discussions with the midfielder about his contract renewal in the year 2024.

A new contract may help Barcelona ensure that de Jong will be a member of their team at Camp Nou for the foreseeable future. In the event that the club absolutely needs to part ways with the player, they will be in a much stronger position to bargain with potential suitors.

In addition, according to Fabrizio Romano, the concept of extending de Jong’s contract beyond the year 2026 is well received by all parties.

In spite of this, Barca may run into some financial roadblocks in their attempt to extend the Dutchman’s current contract. Despite trading away a number of players over the course of the summer, the club is still saddled with an excessively high salary burden.

For his part, De Jong has already indicated that he is willing to take a pay cut on several times; therefore, it will be interesting to watch if or not Barcelona requests that he take a pay cut of even greater magnitude in order to prolong the current deal.

In the meanwhile, De Jong is sitting out due to his injury, but he is in the last stages of his recovery and should be back in action as soon as the international break is over.
