Tatum attributes his current success in athletics to the “tough love” instilled by his parents, Justin and Brandy. Born on March 3, 1998, while his parents were students at Saint Louis University, Tatum spent his early years navigating between their separate lives. Despite Justin and Brandy’s eventual separation, Tatum, now a star with the Boston Celtics, fondly recalls accompanying his mother to classes at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and being a presence in his father’s basketball world at Saint Louis University.

Describing himself as a “mama’s boy,” Tatum emphasizes his close bond with his mother, Brandy, whom he considers his “best friend.” Raised primarily by his mother due to his father’s pursuit of a professional basketball career in Europe, Tatum acknowledges the pivotal role his father played in toughening him both on and off the court.

While Justin pursued his basketball dreams in the Netherlands, Brandy, a dedicated student-athlete, made significant sacrifices for her son. Despite unexpected early motherhood, Brandy opted to attend a local college in St. Louis, juggling part-time jobs to cover daycare and tuition costs. This commitment extended through her higher education, including business school and law school, where she continued bringing Jayson to her classes.
