Dominik Szoboszlai has disclosed that the Steven Gerrard tattoo he already had was a factor in his decision to wear No. 8 for Liverpool.
Szoboszlai became Liverpool’s second summer signing after a £60 million deal was agreed on Sunday afternoon.
Alexis Mac Allister, who joined in June from Brighton and wore No. 10 throughout Sadio Mane’s stay with the club, is the latest player to join the club and wear the number.
The new player will don the No. 8 jersey made famous by Steven Gerrard and formerly worn by Naby Keita.
Many of Liverpool’s recent acquisitions look up to Gerrard as a role model due of his heroics while captaining the team, notably in Istanbul.
And Szoboszlai is so moved by the famous midfielder that he got a tattoo of a quotation of his own: “Talent is a divine blessing, but without incredible will and humility, it is worth nothing.”
Upon his arrival at Anfield, the 22-year-old was interviewed by LFCTV on his feelings on donning the No. 8 jersey.
And I answered, “Not [for] a special reason, but of course it’s a great number,” and he said, “Oh, I see.”
Several great athletes have worn this jersey number.
In addition, I have a tattoo of Steven Gerrard’s nаme. What he said… I can’t place it in time, but it was before… which was another reason why.
Previous to Gerrard, Emile Heskey wore the No. 8 jersey, as did Oyvind Leonhardsen, Stan Collymore, Jamie Redknapp, and Paul Stewart during the Premier League period.
It appears that the current day’s famous 43-year-old was a major inspiration for Szoboszlai to develop this.
