San Antonio Spurs’ strong shooting was no match for a late fourth quarter Miami Heat run, which led to another home loss in their five-game losing streak.
Again at home in front of a packed house, the San Antonio Spurs prepared for the Miami Heat’s powerful offense.
San Antonio’s comeback against Minnesota Timberwolves failed one game ago. Then, the courts were green and the Spurs looked odd.
“The city jerseys resemble San Antonio, not the Spurs,” observed Victor Wembanyama.
San Antonio fought with the courts screaming Spurs and the jersey to match. It lost again, 118-113, to the locker room in the fourth quarter.
Despite shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 43.2 percent from deep, the Spurs lost to Miami’s last-minute onslaught.
Victor Wembanyama scored 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two stocks, while Keldon Johnson led San Antonio with 20 points and six assists in the loss.
Both teams were competitive early on. However, Keldon Johnson, Victor Wembanyama, and Devin Vassell scored to put San Antonio up by double digits midway through the first period.
Both teams headed into the second quarter with a 14-point lead.
The Spurs were reminded by Miami that it won the Eastern Conference.
Bam Adebayo, who had 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals, and Duncan Robinson, who had 26 points and shot well from 3-point range, helped the Heat get within two points and almost take a lead with five minutes left. It kept the Spurs at bay until halftime, down by three points.
Second half was more of the same. Both teams battled until 30 seconds left in the third quarter. Malaki Branham sank an And-1 3-pointer to retake the lead heading into the fourth quarter after Kevin Love free throws gave Miami its first lead.
From there, Wembanyama took over. At least he tried.
Using a midrange pull-up, alley-oop finish, and 3-pointer, the Spurs took an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter and held on. Doug McDermott fired two 3s to help, but Adebayo, Duncan Robinson, and Butler kept the Heat within striking distance.
After Butler scored two more points on a midrange fadeaway, Sochan’s one-handed free throws put San Antonio back in lead for the final two minutes.
After the Spurs turned it over, Josh Richardson sank a two-point shot to tie the game, and two free throws put it away. The Heat scored seven straight to win 118-113 on the road.
The Spurs fell to 3-7 before Tuesday’s road game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chet Holmgren and Wembanyama’s first regular season meeting.
San Antonio would improve its Western Conference standing with a win, while a loss would extend their five-game losing streak.
Tuesday’s Paycom Center tipoff is 6:30 p.m. CST.
